The Theory Behind Acupuncture

According to traditional Chinese medical theory, several acupoints lie along the meridians or channels in the human body. These energy meridians are targeted with acupuncture. It is believed that life force or vital energy flows through these invisible channels. Moreover, these twelve major meridians connect a network of organs, thereby establishing a connection throughout the body.

As per the theory, when one of these major meridians are blocked out or stop functioning properly, illness occurs. Acupuncture helps the meridians function properly and restore the balance of the body.

How does Acupuncture work?

You have to lie down on a soft massage table while an expert inserts thin needles on the acupoints based on the condition you are suffering. This process awakens the meridians and helps them function properly. At times, stretching or acupressure massage is done before the acupuncture session. Typically, a session lasts for about an hour. However, for best results, it is necessary to undergo multiple sessions, as suggested by the expert.

Few Precautions

Acupuncture, in general, is a safe procedure. However, in the case of certain conditions, it is better to avoid acupuncture and go with a traditional treatment method:

  • If the area of treatment is anywhere near a cancerous tumour, or if cancer has spread to bones, acupuncture should be avoided.
  • People who are suffering from conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, bone diseases, or spinal injuries, should stay away from this procedure.
  • If you have varicose veins, do not go for acupuncture.
  • Acupuncture should be avoided during pregnancy.

With no limitations at all and capable of effectively treating conditions like arthritis, pain, depression, and anxiety, there is no doubt that acupuncture will gain more popularity with time.
