The American Association of Orthodontists recently announced that adults are no longer behind or reluctant in getting orthodontic treatment. One in every three such patients is above 18 years, and the number is on the rise. AAO also stipulated that around 1.61 million adults went for orthodontic treatment in 2018.

Here’s our take on the rising number of adults getting orthodontic treatment:

  • It is common for teeth to shift the position with a person’s age.
  • There are many people, who did not have braces as a child but do desire straight teeth. We all want a perfect smile, don’t we?
  • Misaligned teeth, if left untreated, can be the gateway to more serious problems like gum disease, tooth decay, difficulty in chewing, and the abnormal wearing of tooth enamel. The sooner you start the treatment the higher are the chances of complete restoration of dental health.
  • An injury is often a common cause for misaligned teeth, and injury knows no age.
  • Often the bite is off, resulting in teeth grinding, headaches, and back pain.

Some insurance plans (and not all) cover orthodontic treatments for adults. On the other hand, out-of-pocket payers can expect the cost to be anywhere between $3,000 to $6,000 – according to U.S. News and World Report.
