Migraine, a neurological disease, can be severe at times and is the second leading cause of disability around the world. Unfortunately, most people discontinue their medications due to the side effects or ineffectiveness.

In a recent clinical trial from Wake Forest Baptist Health, researchers showed that MBSR or mindfulness-based stress reduction might be helpful to migraine patients.

MBSR is a mind-body treatment teaching moment-by-moment awareness through mindfulness meditation and yoga. An article published by JAMA Internal Medicine focuses on a study made by researchers to find the efficiency of MBSR in treating this neurological condition.

89 adults with prior history of this neurological condition were included in the study.

They went through training or instructions for eight weekly two-hour sessions. The participants in the MBSR group not only reported experiencing fewer days with migraines but also enjoyed lesser disability and improved quality of life.

Needless to say, at a time when opioids are still being used to treat migraines, a non-drug option with long-term benefit will surely help patients enjoy a better view of life.
